Löwchen Club of America Sweepstakes
Judging Saturday 2nd June 2001

CRITIQUE
by Meriel Taylor

May I first of all take this opportunity of thanking the Löwchen Club for asking me to judge the sweepstakes classes and for making me feel so welcome and for the lovely judges bag and gift. Also many thanks to the exhibitors for the sporting way they accepted me as a replacement judge.
I realise that this came about owing to Ms Madeline Fish’s husband being ill. I sincerely hope that he has now recovered.

Whilst I was pleased with the breed in general, what did concern me was the lack of depth in the young males, where as the bitches were stronger.
Presentation on the whole was good, though a little different to how we present the breed in the UK.

Class 1. Dogs 6mos and under 9 mos.

1. Meanmark Dun’n Dusted At Bigglesmere.
Owner: June Arn & Bill Dreker
8 months, Gold Sable. Very eye catching puppy and underneath the coat breed type.
Superb head and eye, good pigment. Good mouth . Nice reach of neck, well laid back shoulders, nice rear angulation. Just needs to tighten in front, if the handler would loose the lead a little this would help, as his front feet were hardly on the floor. On a looser lead he moved more positively.

2. Natchez Witches’ Brew.
Owner: Wade Kolstinen & Morgan Quirin
7 months, parti color. Showy little dog, with a good head and eye. He had lovely movement, but, I would like more body and a little more length of leg. If these come he should do well.

Class 2. 9 mos and under 12mos Dogs

1. Annex Soldier’s Honor at Jorvian.
Owner: Richard and Joan Van Skiver
A natural showman who was also my Best of Opposite Sex in Sweepstakes.
10 months, Black and Silver. Correct head and eye. Good scissor bite. Nice reach of neck, leading into well laid shoulders. Good body and topline, with correct tail set. Nice angulation.
Moved so freely and I later learnt that he had just become a champion. One to watch in the future.

2. Touche Baiser.
    Owner: Jennifer and Richard Lawless
10 months, White. A little on the large size for his age.
Good head and eye, but I found him to be a little short in neck and not the shoulder placement of 1. Movement was ok

Class 3. 12mos and under 16mos Dogs

1. CH. Lionheart Willem V Ivytree.
Owner: Carolyn J Marzano and Carol Strong.
13 months, Sable. Good head and eye, although his head still needs to mature. Correct scissor bite.
He had a lovely neck leading into well laid shoulders, good body and good rear angulation.
He covered the ground well when moved at the correct speed. Please do not run with him as this throws his movement out. Beautifully presented.

2. Analicia Sinbad the Sailor.
Owner: June Arn and Bill Dreker.
12 months, Black and Silver Male. I found him to be lacking in substance for a male. He does not have the depth in head that is a requirement of this breed. His mouth could be better . I would have preferred a little more neck and a better lay of shoulder. Needs to tighten in front.

BITCH CLASSES

Class 4. Sweepstakes 6mos and under 9 mos.

This was a very difficult class to judge as both had good points.

1. Bedlams Can’t Resist.
    Owner: Alice Bixler
6 months, Sable. A sweet little girl who has potential. Her head needs to broaden as I found her a little long in muzzle. She needs to body up.

2. Natchez Bipity Bopity Boo.
Owner: Morgin Quirin & Sally Waltrip
6 months, Parti colour. She was completely overawed by the whole proceedings. Movement was very difficult to assess and she was out of coat. Sympathetically handled

Class 5. Sweepstakes 9 mos and under 12mos

1. Kismet’s Black Gold.
Owner: Kathy Bumiller & Nadine Pelleschi.
What can one say about this bitch. It has been a long time since a dog or bitch made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, but she did. She just screams Löwchen and I was not disappointed when I went over her. Breed type throughout. Superb conformation. Good Head and eye of correct colour. Correct movement and she was put down to perfection.
She was my Best in Sweeps and my co judge gave her Best of Breed which made her up on the day. I wish she was mine!!!!

Class 6. Sweepstakes 12 mos and under 16 mos.

1. Pluperfect Pemberley.
    Owner: Jonathan Jeffrey Kimes
14 months, Chocolate. Another bitch who said (Look at Me). Breed type throughout, sound mover, but please do not go so fast with her, as her movement goes. When asked to take her more steadily she easily won the class. Nicely presented

2. Ch. Lionheart Grace V Ivytree.
Owner: Carolyn J Marzano & Carol Strong.
13 months, Black and Silver. Good head and eye. Nice neck into well laid shoulders. Nice rear angulation. Beautifully presented. 1 just had the edge on the day.

Class7. Sweepstakes 16mos and under 20 mos,

1. Disneyland’s Vivat-Vivat Viktoria.
Owner: Jean Richland & Nancy Martin.
19 months, Silver. Nicely constructed bitch, who oozes breed type. Good head and eye. Nice neck leading into good lay of shoulder. Good rear angulation. Beautifully presented and I believe she has recently become a Champion. Well Done.

2. Desusa’s Simply Irrisistable.
Owner: Susan Tapp & Steven Pinelli.
19 months, Chocolate. Pretty little girl who was out of coat and body condition. She needs to mature.

Class 8. Sweepstakes Veteran Dog 7 years and under 10 years.

1. Kismets Black Tie Affair.
    Owner: Sandy Lunka.
7 year old pied. Father of my best in Sweeps Winner. She definitely has inherited some of his good qualities. He has a beautiful head and eye. Good mouth. Good neck and shoulders... good rear angulation. Moved beautifully.

Class 9. Sweepstakes Veteran Bitch. 7 years and under 10 years.

1. Ashford’s Nyssah V Ivytree.
    Owner: Carolyn J Marzano.
Nearly 11 years of age. For an older lady she moved very nicely and she was so happy to be the centre of attention. In good condition for her age, which is all credit to her owners.

Best Veteran was the dog Kismets Black Tie Affair.

Once again many thanks to the Löwchen Club of America for their hospitality and to the exhibitors for their warm and genuine welcome.

I hope to see you all again one day.

Meriel Taylor.
